Obesity and Bariatric Surgery
Obesity is no longer considered a cosmetic issue that is caused by overeating and a lack of self-control. The World Health Organization (W.H.O.), along with National and International medical and scientific societies, now recognize obesity as a chronic progressive disease resulting from multiple environmental and genetic factors.
The disease of obesity is extremely costly not only in terms of economics, but also in terms of individual and societal health, longevity, and psychological well-being. Due to its progressive nature, obesity requires life-long treatment and control.
The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery has provided this informative video to educate patients on the safe and efficient solution for people with obesity. For more information, visit www.asmbs.org.

Bariatric Surgical Descriptions
Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
A weight loss procedure that is very effective at losing weight and treating several medical conditions. With this procedure a long segment of your small bowel is bypassed thus preventing absorption. Also, your stomach is made into a small pouch allowing you to fill fuller faster. The gastric bypass is considered a more aggressive approach but does give more powerful results. This procedure does take longer but you usually stay in the hospital only 1-2 days.
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
Is a weight loss procedure that significantly reduces the size of your stomach thus allowing you to feel full faster and consume less. It helps treat several medical conditions that are associated with obesity such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The procedure typically takes 1 hour and you stay in the hospital 1 to 2 days. This has become a very popular weight loss procedure due to its success with weight loss and overall better safety profile.
Laparoscopic Single Anastomosis Duodenal Switch
The ”switch,” or duodenal switch procedure, is a weight loss operation that combines qualities of both the sleeve gastrectomy and the gastric bypass. This operation works by decreasing caloric intake, reducing absorption and changing the hormonal balance in the GI tract. This is another procedure that is consider more aggressive then the gastric sleeve but does give more powerful results. It is usually reserved for patients with higher BMIs(>50).
Determining which one of these procedures is right for you will depend on several factors. The final decision should be made after a detailed discussion with your surgeon. We would love to visit with you and discuss the options and guide you to the best decision. It is very exciting for us to offer these life-changing procedures.
